Tips for a Successful Rockhounding Trip in Oregon
Looking for rocks and minerals in Oregon is fun-just be prepared!
Places
You can start small and keep your eyes open when you are at the beach or the river.

A while ago we visited the Sandy River nearby or took trips out to Tillamook Bay and Ecola State Park.
Driving out to Central Oregon around Prineville will get you thundereggs.

For more adventure you can visit one of the sunstone mines in Plush, Oregon. That’s next on our wishlist!
Supplies to bring
Bring supplies. Plan your trip. Bring tools. Bring water and first aid and car kit. Have fun!
Must Haves-
- Water and Snacks
- Maps (paper or downloaded to your phone- most areas won’t have service)
- Work boots and jackets (some people wear sandals out here, you are crazy)
- Sunglasses and hats (sunscreen)
- Rock hammer or pick
- Bucket
- Food and coffee for the way back
- First Aid Kit and Car Kit

You will be in the desert or away from cities. It’s like camping. Pack at least two layers of clothes: it can get cold in the mountains even in the summer: one year it snowed at Glass Butte a week before summer!

Expect the Unexpected
Relax and don’t panic. Emergency car kits include road flares, battery charger, Fix-A-Flat, tire pump, spare tire, and tool kit.
There will definitely be an adventure on the road. One year in Prineville we got two flat tires in one day! I still can’t believe we took a baby with us to dig in pits around glassy rocks.

Good luck rockhounding!
I warned you >.<
It’s fun.
